With the installation of educational boards about lynxes, we introduce visitors to the conservation projects that are being carried out in Slovenia for lynx conservation, or that have been topical in the past.

Dinaris Project:

Dinaris Project:
The project ran between 2007 and 2009. Cooperation in the management, conservation and research of the Dinaric lynx population was carried out across national borders. The project's aims were: to get to know the Slovenian lynx population, their problems and the attitude of the Slovenian public towards them. Large predators need large hunting grounds to survive, and they travel great distances daily or seasonally in search of food, mates or in retreat to unoccupied territories. Animals do not recognise national borders, so lynxes often cross between Slovenia and Croatia, since their home is the continuous forests of the Dinarides, which stretch across both countries. For this reason it was necessary to establish a cross-border network of partnerships in the northern Dinarides, which helped to ensure the long-term conservation of the high natural value of the lynxes' habitat.

3Lynx Project:

3Lynx Project:
The project has been running since 2017 and will continue until 2020. It includes monitoring, management and stakeholder involvement across three population areas. The aim of the project is: to connect as many areas of the Eurasian lynx as possible and to ensure unified and joint management and monitoring. In Europe, lynxes do not live evenly distributed, but rather in ever smaller groups, which, due to the disappearance and fragmentation of their habitat, often no longer come into contact with each other. This can lead to inbreeding, which first leads to impoverished genetic material and then to reduced reproductive ability, as we are witnessing in Slovenia. The aim of this project is therefore to harmonise the methods of studying, monitoring, managing and conserving the Eurasian lynx, which requires cooperation between various competent organisations across three lynx population areas in Europe spanning five countries.

LIFE Lynx:

LIFE Lynx:
The project has been running since 2017 and will continue until 2024. The purpose of the project is to save the lynx in the Dinarides and the southeastern Alps from extinction by translocating unrelated animals from the Carpathian population into Slovenia and Croatia. Lynxes will also be translocated into the Alpine region, with the aim of better connecting these two neighbouring populations for improved gene exchange. A scientific approach will be used for saving and managing the lynx population. The knowledge gained will be incorporated into management plans and other strategic documents for the protection and conservation of the lynx. If you want to be part of the story of saving the lynx, you can get involved with a Local Advisory Group. Send an email to life.lynx.eu@gmail.com. More at https://www.lifelynx.eu/ !
