New Enclosure for Canadian Wolves at ZOO Ljubljana

New Enclosure for Canadian Wolves at ZOO Ljubljana

ZOO Ljubljana is planning a new enclosure for Canadian wolves, which will be located in the upper wooded part of the zoo above the Canadian beavers.

At the end of 2025, the City Municipality of Ljubljana reviewed a new municipal spatial plan linked to the ZOO Ljubljana development plan through to 2031.

In October 2025 the tender procedure for the construction of the new wolf enclosure was published, for which we already hold the building permit. Activities are currently under way to secure a contractor and are expected to conclude in the first half of March. Construction of the new enclosure is planned for this year, with completion in 2027.

This will give the pack of 9 wolves — 3 females and 6 males — a modern, spacious enclosure. The new enclosure is designed in line with current guidelines of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA). It will provide for their welfare, as wolves run a great deal, dig, smell, mark territory and bond with one another. Visitors will be able to observe their behaviour properly, while the professional team will be better able to provide comprehensive care for the wolves.
