Winter holiday programme

DayActivityDescription
Monday, 16 February 2026How animals adapt to winter. We will look at which animals sleep or doze through the cold winter and what happens in their bodies during this time, or how they prepare for winter. At ZOO Ljubljana we will also check which animals warm themselves in indoor heated areas. We will find out where the brown bears and beavers have hidden themselves and try to dispel any fears of cockroaches and snakes.
Tuesday, 17 February 2026Animal camouflage. Are animals also in disguise? Animals have adapted in various ways to help them survive, whether hiding from predators or hunting prey. Some mimic plants through their shape and colour, others use bright colours to warn that they are venomous, and some non-venomous species mimic the patterns of venomous ones. Predators use solid or spotted coats to hide as they stalk prey.
Wednesday, 18 February 2026Do animals get cold in winter? In winter, animals use all sorts of tricks to survive! Some put on a thicker winter coat, others stock up on food. Some fall into a deep winter sleep, while the most adventurous travel to warmer lands. We will see and learn about alpacas, sea lions, Siberian tigers, red pandas and Bactrian camels and discuss how they are adapted to winter. We will also get close to a European otter and a Nubian dove.
Thursday, 19 February 2026Where I live, there is no winter. In winter, we have to help animals that are not adapted to low temperatures to survive the cold, lack of food and unfavourable conditions. We will discuss how we look after such animals at ZOO Ljubljana. We will prepare peanut spreads for the birds.
Friday, 20 February 2026Nature’s magical diversity and caring for nature. If we are curious enough to get to know nature, there is no doubt it will draw us in and inspire us. And we will never again ask why we need to protect it. We will discuss what we can do ourselves for the conservation of nature and observe the maned wolf, lynx, reindeer, red-necked wallaby and black-and-white ruffed lemur and their role in nature. We will pet a skink and a bird-eating spider.
