Adventures on Gregor’s Day
10. March 2025
10. March 2025

For the fourth year running, ZOO Ljubljana is building on the tradition of floating ‘gregorčki’ — little floating houses on the rivers. Instead, we will be building nest boxes for birds, which will become ‘living gregorčki’ once bird pairs take them up and nest in them.
We will talk about the importance of nest boxes, which ones are best and what to look out for when putting them up. We will recognise birdsong, learn about the courtship customs of birds, identify them by their calls and perhaps find out what they are telling each other.
The workshop at the wildlife hotel at ZOO Ljubljana will be led by Ivan Esenko, writer, photographer and conservationist, and a great bird expert.
Dates: 15 and 16 March 2025 from 11:00 to 13:00 and from 14:00 to 16:00
Location: at the wildlife hotel
I. Bird adventures:
Interesting facts from the lives of birds
Watching birds at the bird feeder
Identifying birds by their calls
Making bird nest boxes
Making treats for birds
II. Fun quiz ''Interesting facts from the lives of birds''
In the upper part of the zoo we have installed bird-shaped boards with interesting facts about their courtship. You’ll learn how a peacock displays to the females, how a pair of crows share the duties of nesting, that a tit can even nest in a letterbox, how a woodpecker shows its mate suitable places for the nest and whether it is really true that magpies love shiny objects.
This year the boards and the fun quiz are in both Slovenian and English.
Join us for bird adventures and for the fun quiz about bird courtship, available at the ticket desk or during the adventure.
You are warmly invited!
