Moose Calves

13. June 2019

Our moose Olaf and Eli have become parents for the first time. The female is an excellent mother and is very protective of her long-legged twins, a male and a female. They are most active in the morning and often stay in the very top part of the enclosure. Watch carefully, as moose blend in well with their surroundings, despite being the largest members of the deer family.

Moose Calves

Pregnancy in females lasts about 231 days and they give birth on average to one calf, although twins are common. Calves are born weighing about 16 kg on average and gain about 1 kg per day from suckling. Both males and females reach sexual maturity at two years. They become adults at 4 or 5 years; at this age females are at their reproductive peak, and males have the largest antlers. The antlers of male moose are the largest of any mammal and can weigh as much as 35 kg.
