Winter Newborns

16. January 2021

On the first day of the year, an adorable alpaca cria greeted staff bright and early — its name comes as no surprise. The low January temperatures don’t bother it at all, just as they don’t bother the twin Jezersko-Solčava sheep, who will be the first to delight visitors of the Ljubljana Zoo when it reopens.

Winter Newborns

At the end of December, lambs of the Jezersko-Solčava sheep were born in our barn. This is a Slovenian native breed with a distinctive arched head profile, affectionately nicknamed ‘bicka’. As the name suggests, it originates from the Jezersko, Solčava and southern Carinthia regions. It was created by crossing the primitive native white sheep with the Padovana and Bergamasca sheep. They are known for often having twins — including at ZOO Ljubljana. You will see them in the enclosure with Slovenian native breeds, near the entrance to the zoo.

Alpaca crias are usually not twins. After almost a year of pregnancy, the female gives birth to one cria; in only about 1 in 1,000 cases are two born. At the zoo, alpaca Bela gave birth to a cria on New Year’s Day itself, whom we named Silvester.  Alpaca mothers are very protective of their crias, and the rest of the herd also defends them from intruders. As the cria is not yet used to visitors, please be very considerate at the enclosure and observe its antics calmly and quietly.

You are warmly invited!
