In winter, more noticeable animals that thrive in colder temperatures
Winter at ZOO Ljubljana reveals a very different pulse to the zoo — calmer, more authentic and often even more picturesque. Visitors can see many changes in our animals. The elephant Ganga has a new feature that stands out: strip curtains that help her retain heat in the indoor area during winter, while also allowing her to step outside for a brief breath of fresh air whenever she wants. Many animals now sport a thicker, softer coat, including reindeer, moose, sika and hog deer.

The ‘safari’ area is lively too, where the giraffe, guinea fowl, lechwe antelope and ostriches mingle. On the pond islands, the pink pelicans reign, their feathers shining in the loveliest shades of pink in the colder part of the year. At the sea lions, visitors can also watch a demonstration of veterinary training in winter, while the red pandas enjoy the fresh air and the chill, as this is the climate of their natural habitat.
Only a few animals, as in the wild, enjoy winter sleep or a doze. Our bears, which the keepers intentionally fattened up well in autumn, now rest calmly; some snakes also sleep.
With all the winter arrangements, the keepers ensure that the animals are comfortably housed, and the zoo offers visitors a calm, special and magical experience.
