Asian Elephant

Elephas maximus

A unique nose
The Asian elephant, like all elephants, is recognisable by its trunk. The trunk evolved in elephant ancestors as a fusion and elongation of the upper lip and the nose. It is a multi-purpose organ. Elephants breathe through it, use it to smell, draw up to 10 litres of water into it and spray themselves, or carry water to their mouth and drink. With it they can grasp and carry things, trumpet and communicate, fight or caress one another. The elephant''s trunk contains a great number of muscle fibres running in different directions, making it extremely flexible. The trunk has more than 40,000 muscles — more than in our entire body.
