Domesticated Bactrian camels
When listing domestic animals, many people probably don't think of the camel, even though Bactrian camels have been domesticated for at least 4,000 years, and today there are many more domesticated camels in the world than wild ones. The Bactrian camels at our zoo are also domesticated; there are fewer than 1,000 wild Bactrian camels in the world and they are critically endangered.

Scientists have long studied the relationship between wild and domestic Bactrian camels. Some believed wild Bactrians were the direct ancestors of the domesticated ones, while others held that wild ancestors of domestic Bactrian camels no longer exist and that today's wild populations are only feral descendants of once-domesticated camels. Genetic research suggests they are two separate subspecies or even species, whose last common ancestor lived long before the domestication of camels.
