Long- and short-distance runners
During evolution, the ancestors of the emu lost the ability to fly. They developed into excellent runners over both short and long distances. They are the only birds that have fast-twitch muscle fibres in their calf muscles, which they rely on for short bursts of speed. The other muscles in their legs also contain slow-twitch fibres, which allow them to cover marathon distances steadily. They can sustain a high speed for a very long time, up to 48 km/h. With their muscular legs they can also jump well and kick powerfully.
