Maned Wolf

Chrysocyon brachyurus

Maned Wolf

Chrysocyon brachyurus

The maned wolf is the tallest wild canid in the world, reaching shoulder heights of up to 100 cm. Its long legs allow it to walk more easily through the tall South American grass and give it an excellent view of its surroundings. Although the name suggests a wolf, it is not in fact a close relative of true wolves, but belongs to a special group of South American canids. With its reddish coat and distinctive "maned" appearance, it is one of the most unusual and recognisable members of the dog family in the world.

It also stands out in terms of diet. Among wild canids it is the most plant-eating, with more than 70% of its diet made up of fruit and plants.
