Philippine Hornbill

Penelopides panini

The Philippine hornbill is not generally known as a "record-holder" in terms of size, speed or other extreme characteristics. What is particularly worth highlighting is its unique nesting behaviour (during which females are "walled in" inside the nest) — one of the most remarkable examples of parental care in the bird world. This trait is shared with other hornbill species and is especially important in the conservation context, as habitat loss severely limits the availability of suitable nesting sites.
