Science Day — Traffic ZOO
ZOO Ljubljana is a large classroom where we can encounter many role models from nature. We reach learning objectives through attention guided by our animal mentors. The link between nature and science comes together in bionics.
About the day
The education service is available by phone between 07:30 and 11:30, so please send all booking enquiries by email, to which we respond regularly.
ZOO Ljubljana is a large classroom where we can encounter many role models from nature. We reach our learning objectives through attention guided by our animal mentors. The link between nature and science comes together in bionics.
During Science Day we compare the zebra to a pedestrian crossing. We explore the paths used by animals and compare their trails to pavements and roads. For visibility in traffic we encourage children to use reflectors, torches and lights, and we draw a link with the eyes of big cats and animals that emit their own light. We are also inspired by animals with warning colours, some of which warn of danger or inedibility (salamander), while others blend into their surroundings (antelope). In traffic it is important to use protective gear such as a seatbelt, helmet, back protector and knee, elbow and wrist guards. We observe the animals and see how nature has provided for their protection against predators and injuries (turtle, armadillo, camel). The children develop manual skills and creativity by making a reflector in the shape of an animal, which they can stick or hang on their school bag, or make a turtle after they have got to know it through experience.
Why Science Day — Traffic ZOO is the right choice for you
Road safety skills are gained through experiential learning, which includes:
MEETING THE ANIMALS, which at Traffic ZOO we have named mentors. These are animals that have inspired the transfer of nature’s inventions into human technology in the field of transport. We observe the animals and see how nature has provided for their protection against predators and injuries. The animals also have a very positive effect on children’s motivation to learn and remember.
INTERESTING LEARNING GAMES, BIOLOGICAL MATERIAL AND PROPS with which children build on their theoretical knowledge of traffic. In traffic it is important to use protective gear such as a seatbelt, helmet, back protector and knee, elbow and wrist guards.
MAKING A SIMPLE CRAFT on the theme of traffic, through which children develop manual skills and creativity. They take the item home and use it in road traffic.
A WORKSHEET that can also be completed in the nursery / school to continue learning about traffic.
MEETING THE OBJECTIVES set out in the nursery curriculum and the school curriculum, including the lesson plan for movement exercises and road safety.

Insects Under the Microscope
A NEW learning session at ZOO Ljubljana. In this new hands-on learning session we open the door for pupils to the often overlooked yet exceptionally varied and interesting world of insects — animals with remarkable shapes, transformations and survival strategies. Pupils will take a close look at some insects and investigate their body structure.

Multi-hour Guided Tour
From November to the end of March we run multi-hour guided tours (Science Day), mainly for primary and secondary schools. In the company of a guide we tour the zoo over 4 to 5 school lessons, experience the animals and, with the help of biological materials, get a closer look at the characteristics of different animal groups. The Science Day programme meets the learning objectives set out in the curricula.

One-hour Guided Tour
In one hour, with a guide, you experience the animals and see part of the zoo. You can explore the rest of the animals on your own. Tours are designed for nurseries, primary and secondary schools, and for all other organised groups and families.
