Lechwe Antelope

Kobus leche kafuensis

Inhabitants of the marshlands along the Kafue River in Zambia
Lechwe water antelopes, true to their name, are adapted to life near water and in marshy environments. As is typical of all water antelopes, they take refuge in the water when threatened. Their hooves are wide and splayed, making it easier to walk on marshy ground. They live in large herds that can number up to 5,000 animals of both sexes at the peak of the rainy season, though herds are often made up only of females with their young. Outside the mating season, males can also form independent groups of 50 to 3,000 males and usually inhabit slightly drier environments than the females.
