Prey and predator
Meerkats are very successful predators, but at the same time they can themselves be prey for many larger animals. Their predatory nature is shown by their sharp teeth and elongated, sensitive nose, which lets them sniff out roots, tubers and prey hidden underground. They are protected from larger predators by living in groups and by varied defensive behaviour, including characteristic sentry duty, warning members of the group of danger, hiding in burrows, and also an erect, intimidating stance with which they try to drive attackers away.
