Southern Screamer

Chauna torquata

Southern Screamer

Chauna torquata

One of the loudest birds
This South American bird is known for the distinctive velvety black collar that gives it its name. Although we cannot say the southern screamer is a record-holder in any of its traits, we can say it is one of the loudest birds in the world, thanks to its piercing calls, which can be heard several kilometres away. It uses this vocalisation to communicate with other individuals, to announce its territory and to maintain contact with its partner.
