Western Chimpanzee

Pan troglodytes verus

Until recently, humans believed they were the only ones who could make and use tools, but it turns out that quite a few animal species are capable of this. Chimpanzees were the first non-human animals in which humans observed and recorded the use of tools. Different chimpanzee populations know different tools — for example: sticks specially shaped for catching termites, stone tools for cracking nuts, and even pointed tools for hunting. Knowledge of how to make and use tools is passed within a group from one generation to the next.
