From Europe to Africa and back
Storks, like many other migratory birds, must each year find their way to southern wintering grounds and then back to nesting sites in the north. Mostly in August, flocks of white storks migrate from Europe towards the south and arrive in Africa in early October, where they spend the winter. Their sense of orientation is partly innate and partly relies on older flockmates.

But storks are rather large birds and rely heavily on air currents for flight with their large, broad wings. Warm, rising air currents over land are most favourable for their long journey. They therefore almost never migrate to Africa across the Mediterranean Sea, but fly around it via Spain in the west or Turkey in the east.
