Wolf

Canis lupus occidentalis

Wolf

Canis lupus occidentalis

The largest member of the dog family in the world
An adult weighs about 40 kg; males are slightly larger than females. They live in packs led by a male and a female, and the other pack members are usually their offspring. They communicate through very expressive facial expressions, body posture (especially the tail) and vocalisations. Their howling is well known: through it, pack members reinforce the bonds between them and signal to other wolves that the territory is occupied. In the forest, a wolf's howl can be heard up to 9.6 km away.
